Holika Festival Information
Commonly known as Holi is a festival of spring arrayed with the sprouting of the tender green leaves on the trees, the blossoming of flowers in the field and the sweet calls of the Cuckoo emblem the arrival of a fresh season.
This is one of the most ebullient Hindu festivals, celebrated mainly in northern part of India, dominantly called the festival of colors, water, fun and enthusiasm and brotherhood.

Legend has it
The Holi bonfire, often a community event, is also a commemoration of the Puranic legend in which the demonic Holika was burnt to death and the victory of good over evil was once again secured.
Thc night before the full moon, crowds of people gather in open spaces and light tremendous bonfires to burn the remnants of dry leaves and twigs of the winter. Hutashani the God of Fire is offered corn, new vegetables, coconuts, butter, sweets, flowers and vermilion.
This vivacious festival is also associated with the immortal love of Krishna and Radha. The young Krishna complaining his mother Yashoda that why Radha is so beautiful and fair and he so dark. Yashoda answer her inquisitive son Krishna and advised him to apply color on Radha's face and see how her complexion would change.

Celebrations
This joyful new beginning is celebrated on the full moon day of Phalgun. The festival is celebrated with full enthusiasm irrespective of cast and religion. It succeeded in bridging the social gap, between the people of all religion, among the rich and poor, old and poor and between men and women. People visit homes of their known ones, distribute sweets and apply Gulal (color) on each other, symbolic of peace and happiness. Apart from this usual fun, Holi is characterized by enchanting processions, folk songs, dances and a general sense of abandon vivacity.

Time of Festivity
Holi is also a festival of feast. Garlands of dry-fruits, sweets, sugar-toys are normally given to children. Gujias a special sweet dish stuffed with the fillings of milk product, coconut and dry fruits is the specialty of the festival. Besides this, Puranpolis with jaggery flavor, Sanjoris filled with ‘halwa’ made of semolina and different varieties of pancakes are made on this occasion.
