About Pallakad Fort
The ancient Pallakad Fort is located in the Pallakad district of Kerala in
the southern part of India. Built in 1766 by Hyder Ali of Mysore, the fort
was primarily constructed to gain strategic control over the western coast
and enable a link between Coimbatore and Pallakad. The fort wasn't however
destined to serve the ruler and was captured shortly after by the British
from where it passed into the hands of the Zamorin's. The British won
control over the structure again in 1790 after a bloody battle and thus
started a long history of British rule over Pallakad. The fort owing to its
historical importance is presently taken care of by the Archaeological
Survey of India.
The fort has great historical importance attached
to it, being witness to numerous bloody battles that saw it passing into the
hands of various dynasties. It is also considered to be one of the best
preserved and one of the most beautifully built forts in the country. The
granite used in its construction is of the finest variety and still stands
without too many scars on it even years after its construction. The citadel
styled architecture depicts the glorious past of the princely state.
