Khajuraho at Glance
Khajuraho city, the capital of Chandela Kings was build between 950 A.D.
and 1050 A.D. The gothic lustrous Khajuraho Temples known all over the world
for their passionate sculptures had a unique prominence of Indo-Aryan
architecture, sanctified to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and the Jain
Tirthankaras. Legend has it, that section of Hinduism, speculate physical
pleasure to be one of the paths to reach God, to procure enlightenment,
which is apparent in the images carved on the walls of temples. These
amazing brilliance were almost lost in the dust of bygone era and were only
rediscovered in 1838 century by Britishers. Initially the temples were 85 in

Temples of Khajuraho

The Khajuraho Temples are broadly divided into 3 groups, Western, Eastern
and Southern.
Western Group of Temples
The Western Group of Temples best protracted by the Archaeological Survey
of India lies in the center of green meadow and kaleidoscopic flowerbeds.

intense, magnificent sculptures of Khajuraho. The Jagadambi temple, the

prestigious Lakshmana temple and it is the starting point to hunt the
fortunes of Khajuraho. At the entrance the ticket has to be taken to enter

The Eastern Group of Temples
The Eastern Group of temples are situated near the Khajuraho village,
includes prestigious temples like Brahma, Vamana and Javari located near the
Khajuraho Sagar and many Jain pilgrims like the Ghantai, Adinath and
Parsvanath situated little further.
The
Southern Group of Temples
Duladeo and the Chaturbhuja temples are the famous temples included in the
Southern Group of Temples. The Duladeo was built in1100-1150A. D is
glorified to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated at a distance of 1km. south
of the Khajuraho village. The Chaturbhuja Temple 3km from the town is
dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Khajuraho Dance Festival
Khajuraho dance festival is organized every year from 25th February to 2nd
March in the state of Madhya Pradesh. This is very colorful dance festival,
attended by thousands of visitors every year. This dance festival takes
place at the open air auditorium in front of the Chitragupta and Vishwanatha
Temple. Khajuraho dance festival is very much famous among all the local as
well as foreign tourists. These festivals started in year 2002 and since
then classical dance performances are presented by professional dances.
Artists and performers from various states of India arrive here to
participate in Khajuraho dance festival. Some of the best known dance
performances in this festival are Kathak, Bharathanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi,
Manipuri and rare and ancient Kathakali with stage fights with elaborate
masks. In recent years, modern Indian dances have also found their place in
the Khajuraho Dance Festival. Along with the dance and music performances,
you can also see a number of craftsmen trading off their arts and crafts
products to the visitors.

Air: Khajuraho is connected by Indian Airlines Flights to
Delhi and other parts of the country.
Rail : Harpalpur at a distance of 110km. is the nearest
railhead. Jhansi at a distance of 175km, Satna 117km are other important
rail junctions for visiting Khajuraho from all metropolitan cities of India
Road: A well-knitted road connects Khajuraho to all parts
of India. Agra is 395 km, Allahabad 285 km, Bhopal 372 km Delhi 590 km,
Lucknow 267 km and Varanasi 415 km.
