The History
Initially the coaches of this luxurious train were the personal railway coaches of the former maharajas of the princely states of Rajasthan, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the British Viceroy to India. Due to its royal ambience, affluent and traditional interiors these coaches were not being used by the Indian Railways. The Palace on Wheels as a most luxurious vacation train started its journey from October 1982. New air-conditioned meter gauge Palace on wheels train was launched with 13 salons, 2 restaurants, kitchen car, in 1982.
