About Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom
Bird Sanctuary, situated in the south Indian state of Kerala is one of the
country's smallest yet one of its most fascinating wildlife habitats. A
visit to this charming abode of birds will introduce you to a diversity of
colorful avian metropolis which include besides the permanent residents a
number of migratory birds that arrive here from the extreme heights of the
Himalayas as also far away places like Siberia and central Asia.
Another nearby tourist attraction is the Pathiramnal island, spread over an
area of 10 acres. The enchanting islands can be accessed via a short boat
ride through the shimmering backwaters surrounding the islands.
Wildlife Attractions in Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a safe heaven for an umpteen number of
beautiful bird species which call the place home. Thousands of trees spread
all over the park provide ideal nesting grounds for these birds, which is a
substantial cause of increase in the number of these creatures. Prominent
amongst the birds found at Kumarakom include water fowl, owls, herons,
parrots, larks, wood beetle, cuckoo, egret, water duck, teal and fly
catchers.
A number of migratory birds also
visit the area during winters and adorn the surroundings of the park till
the onset of the summer season. Some of the commonly spotted migratory birds
at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary include the Siberian stork, darter, teal, egret
and heron.
The best way to spot these winged creatures is to take an early morning
boat ride in the blue backwaters that flow all along the boundaries of the
park. Boats can be easily hired from the office of the tourist reception
centre located near the entrance of the park.
Getting There
By Air : Kumarakom bird sanctuary is located just 16 km
from Kottayam. The place can be conveniently accessed through any of the
three airports located at Cochin, Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) or
Kozhikode. If you arrive at Kochi (Cochin), the best option would be to get
a prepaid taxi from Nedumbassery and reach Kumarakom.
By Rail : Kottayam junction, situated just 15 km from
Kumarakom is the nearest railhead from where the tourists can hire a taxi to
reach Kumarakom.
By Road : The best way to access the sanctuary while
relishing the immense natural beauty on offer is to travel by road. Kottayam
lies on the state highway 1 which links Trivandrum with Cochin. State
transport buses also operate between Kottayam and other neighbouring cities
in Kerala.
